The birth of the Messiah has rightfully been called the greatest story ever told. It is also the greatest story ever foretold. The words in blue in the following are how the story was told in the Gospels of the New Testament. The words in red are how it was foretold by the prophet Isaiah in the Old Testment.

THERE’S A CHILD

There’s a Child born in Bethlehem,
Born in Bethlehem tonight;
And a Star, brightly shining Star
Fill’s the sky with Heaven’s light.
There’s a Child born in Bethlehem, Bethlehem,
And I know it must be Him, must be Him,
He who is to bear our sorrows and grief
And is to be wounded for our unbelief,
So praise him, Shining Star, with all your light
As you light the way to His side tonight.

II

There’s a Child born in Bethlehem,
And in a manger He lies;
Mary, His mother, sings to Him
The sweetest of lullabies.
There’s a Child born in Bethlehem, Bethlehem,
And I know it must be Him, must be Him,
The One by whose stripes we are to be healed,
Through whose chastisement our peace will be sealed,
So praise Him, Shining Star, with all your light
As you light the way to His side tonight;
And praise Him, Mother, with your lullaby;
Sing sweet and softly so He doesn’t cry.

III

There’s a Child born in Bethlehem,
His glory shines all around;
Angels descending from on high
Fill the night with joyful sound.
There’s a Child born in Bethlehem, Bethlehem,
And I know it must be Him, must be Him,
He on whom the Lord shall lay all our guilt,
The One whose blood for our sins will be spilt,
So praise Him, Shining Star, with all your light
As you light the way to His side tonight;
And praise Him, Mother, with your lullaby;
Sing sweet and softly so He doesn’t cry.
Yes, praise him, Angels, with your joyful sound
As you spread His good tidings all around.

IV

There’s a Child born in Bethlehem,
In the lowly stable’s light;
Shepherds in the field are afraid
As they watch their flocks by night.
There’s a Child born in Bethlehem, Bethlehem,
And I know it must be Him, must be Him,
He who shall like a lamb to slaughter go,
Bearing in silence mankind’s rightful woe,

So praise him, Shining Star, with all your light
As you light the way to His side tonight;
And praise Him, Mother, with your lullaby;
Sing sweet and softly so He doesn’t cry;
Yes, praise him, Angels, with your joyful sound
As you spread His good tidings all around;
O praise Him, Shepherds, and be not dismayed;
Come see where He lays and be not afraid;

V

There’s a Child born in Bethlehem,
Son of the Eternal King;
Wise Men come, following His star;
To Him, rich treasures they bring.
There’s a Child born in Bethlehem, Bethlehem,
And I know it must be Him, must be Him,
He who shall pour out His very soul and die
To intercede for sinners such as I,

So praise Him, Shining Star, with all your light
As you light the way to His side tonight;
And praise Him, Mother, with your lullaby;
Sing sweet and softly so He doesn’t cry;
Yes, praise him, Angels, with your joyful sound
As you spread His good tidings all around;
O praise Him, Shepherds, and be not dismayed;
Come see where He lays and be not afraid;
So praise Him, Wise Men, Son of Heaven’s King;
Come adore Him with the treasures you bring.

VI

There’ a Child born in Bethlehem,
God’s gift of love to mankind;
Come every soul upon this sphere
And in Him salvation find.
There’s a Child born in Bethlehem, Bethlehem,
And I know it must be Him, must be Him,
The One who shall be called Emmanuel,
God come down to earth among us to dwell,

So praise Him, Shining Star, with all your light
As you light the way to His side tonight;
And praise Him, Mother, with your lullaby;
Sing sweet and softly so He doesn’t cry;
Yes, praise him, Angels, with your joyful sound
As you spread His good tidings all around;
O praise Him, Shepherds, and be not dismayed;
Come see where He lays and be not afraid;
So praise Him, Wise Men, Son of Heaven’s King;
Come adore Him with the treasures you bring;
Come all people of every land and race,
And praise the One who saves you by His grace.
