"John B. Clark Shot Down by Herbert F. Sheffield.

A dispute over the Sheffield estate which resulted in bad blood between some of the interested parties and lead to the swearing out of a half dozen peace warrants by the heirs against John B. Clark a short while ago, culminated Monday in a bloody tragedy . Mr. Clark being shot twice by his brother-in-law Mr. Herbert Sheffield. Dr. Thigpen took John B. Clark to Jacksonville, Florida for treatment, where he later died from his wounds..."

[Source: Southeast Georgian, dated: Friday July 27 1917]

It is said that John Brewster Clark was killed by his bother-in-law. He was cutting wood on property that belonged to Herbert Forsythe Sheffield, who had told him before he would shoot him if he caught him cutting on his property again when he caught John at it again, john pulled a gun and Herbert shot him. When John fell,he dropped his gun in the water. Herbert was arrested and charged with murder. He claimed self-defense, After several searches of the water the gun was found. Herbert was acquitted. The Baptist church he attended did not agree with the jury and expelled him for 20 years.
