Individual Note:
After commanding numerous commercial vessels, some of which he owned. he became harbor pilot for Savannah, Ga in 1766 and served in that capacity until 1776 when he chose, as a Loyalist, to support the British cause in the Revolution. He fled to St Augustine from where he served as pilot on several British men-of-war. At the war's end, he helped plan and carry out the famous raid that drove the Spanish from Nassau. For his efforts during the war and in the raid, he received two large land grants, one on New Providence, the other on Cat Island, at the precise spot where it was first thought that Columbus had landed. His tract on New Providence eventually became the exclusive residential resort, Lyford Cay, where the likes of author Arthur Hailey and actor Sean Connery now live.

He is one of the four mariner heroes of the book, "Wodden Ships - Iron Men."
