While on patrol with two other scouts he and one of the soldiers were ambushed by Union Soldiers , shot and killed and buried on the sight of a Union sympathizer's property. The third soldier escaped into the woods. He later visited the Houston family telling them how Ashman was killed and where he was buried. John Houston died January 1,1856.
After the war Ashman's mother, Mary and one of the servants, a black man who elected to remain with the family after the Civil War, hitched a horse to a wagon and set out to retrieve Ashman's body. They rode a considerable number of miles through woods an down dusty rutted roads to the place where Ashman was buried. Mary demanded the body of her son from the owner of the land. she was shown where the grave was located and told, "you will never be able to locate him and identify his body, for both soldiers are buried in the same grave." I will know him, I will identify him by his belt buckle. She said.
They brought his body home and buried him in the Houston Family Cemetery on Big Talbot Island, Duval County, Fl. where his family had been buried since 1824.
